Building a Career in Operations: Lessons from the Field (and Why It Matters)
Operations is often described as the backbone of any organization — yet it’s one of the least visible roles until something goes wrong. After more than a decade working across real estate, holiday homes, administration, and operations in the UAE and abroad, I’ve learned that strong operations don’t just support a business — they define how far it can grow.
This blog is my space to share real-world insights from operations, the lessons I’ve learned on the ground, and practical guidance for professionals navigating fast-paced environments, especially in the UAE job market.
What Operations Really Means in Real Life
Operations is not just about processes or checklists. It’s about coordination, accountability, and execution. In property and real estate operations, this often includes:
Managing end-to-end workflows, from onboarding to activation
Ensuring regulatory compliance (DET / DTCM)
Coordinating multiple teams — housekeeping, maintenance, vendors, and management
Tracking costs, timelines, and deliverables
Solving problems before they escalate
When operations works well, everything feels seamless. When it doesn’t, the gaps are immediately felt by clients, guests, and stakeholders.
My Journey in Operations and Property Management
I started my career in administration and accounting, which gave me a strong foundation in structure, accuracy, and financial discipline. Over time, I transitioned into property management and holiday homes operations, where I learned how critical operational excellence is to customer experience and business performance.
One of the most defining moments in my career was during my time with Driven Holiday Homes, where I was deeply involved in property operations, client relations, and coordination. In 2020, I was honored to receive the Employee of the Year Award — a recognition that reflected not just performance, but consistency, reliability, and ownership of operations.
That experience reinforced a key belief I still carry today:
Strong operations professionals are trusted because they deliver — even under pressure.
Why Operations Skills Are Critical in the UAE Market
In the UAE, especially in real estate and service-driven industries, operations roles require more than technical skills. They demand:
Adaptability in fast-changing environments
Cultural awareness and clear communication
System-based thinking using PMS, CRM, and project tools
Attention to compliance, timelines, and service standards
Whether you’re an Operations Executive, Property Coordinator, Admin & Operations Officer, or Onboarding Specialist, your value lies in how well you keep the engine running.
Final Thoughts
Operations may not always be the most visible role, but it is one of the most impactful. My journey — from admin and accounting to property operations and recognition as Employee of the Year — has shown me that consistency, structure, and ownership create long-term success.
Thank you for being here. This is just the beginning.
